How to Care for Your Christmas Tree (And Keep It Fresh All Season Long)
There’s nothing like the scent of a real Christmas tree in your home — but without the right care, it can dry out and drop needles fast. Follow these simple steps to keep your Normann Fir tree looking fresh and festive throughout the entire season.
1. Choose a Fresh Tree
If you're picking your tree in person, look for these signs of freshness:
Vibrant green needles that aren’t dry or brittle
A strong scent when you crush a few needles
Minimal needle drop when you shake the tree gently
💡 Tip: If you’re ordering online from us, we only cut our trees fresh and deliver within days to ensure maximum quality.
2. Trim the Base Before Placing It in Water
Once you get your tree home, cut about ½ inch off the trunk base. This opens up the pores in the wood so the tree can absorb water better — kind of like trimming flower stems.
👉 Important: Do this within 2–4 hours before putting it in water. Otherwise, sap can seal it off.
3. Use a Tree Stand That Holds Plenty of Water
Your tree will drink a lot of water in the first few days — sometimes over a gallon a day.
Make sure your stand can hold at least 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter.
Check the water level daily, and never let it fall below the base of the trunk.
4. Keep It Cool
Avoid placing your tree near heat sources like:
Radiators
Fireplaces
Heat vents
Direct sunlight
These will dry your tree out much faster.
5. No Need for Additives
Plain tap water works just fine. You don’t need to add sugar, aspirin, or commercial preservatives — in fact, they can sometimes do more harm than good.
6. Clean Up Needles Regularly
Some needle drop is normal, especially with certain tree types. Just sweep or vacuum regularly and don’t worry — as long as your tree is drinking water, it’s healthy.
7. Safety First
Check your lights for broken bulbs or frayed wires, and turn them off overnight or when you're not home.
🔥 Tip: Never use candles or open flames near the tree.
